Болгар тилинде сүйлөшөт. Динге ишенгендери негизинен православие дининде, айрымдары гана католик, протестант, мусулман. Б. сербдер ж-а хорваттар м-н бирге түш. славяндар катары эсептелет. Б-дын этностук негизин фракийлер (Чыгыш Балкан ж. а-нын байыркы жашоочулары) ж-а түрк тилдүү протоболгарлар (670-ж. Кара деӊиз боюнан келишкен) м-н ассимиляцияланган славян уруулары (6–7-к-да Балканга көчүп келишкен) түзгөн. Түрк тилдүү протоболгарлар м-н славяндардын биригиши (7-к.) Болгар мамлекетинин пайда болушуна өбөлгө түзүп, ал Болгария деп аталган. 8–9-кда тунгуч Болгар падышалыгы түзүлүп, Б-дын славян тилдүү бир элге айланышына, акча-товар мамилелеринин өнүгүшүнө, славян урууларынын консолидацияланышына түрткү берген. Б-дын түрк үстөмдүгүнө (18-к. аягы – 19-к. башы) каршы улуттук-боштондук күрөшү кайрадан улуттук биримдикке алып келген. 1977–78-ж. орус-түрк согушунда Россиянын жеӊиши м-н болгар эли көз каранды эместикке жетишип, мамлекеттүүлүккө ээ болушкан. Б. дыйканчылык, мал чарбачылык м-н кесиптенишип, кыштан салынган 2–3 кабаттуу үйлөрдө жашашкан. Аялдар туника сыяктуу көйнөк, жеӊсиз кемсел, алжапкыч, улгайгандары сарафан (сукман) кийишип, белине эндүү кездемеден жазы кур курчанып, башына жоолук салынат. Эркектери туника сыяктуу көйнөк, кенен шым, тизеге чейин жеткен кемсел кийишип, жазы кур курчанышат. Тамак-ашы – жашылча кошуп бышырылган эт тамактары, сүт, дан азыктары, жашылча, жер-жемиштер.
